We are located off Highway 63, just north of the Missouri River Bridge in Jefferson City.  Once you take the exit and get on Highway 63 North, like you are going to Columbia, we are 1.5 miles down the highway.  The first right you can make is us, take the gravel road to our office in the tan barn with the green roof

  • What is your pallet/tube deposit policy?

The refundable pallet/tube deposit at SelecTurf, Inc. is $20.00 per wooden sod pallet or plastic tube.

Our hope is that we can work together to ensure pallets/tubes are returned to SelecTurf, Inc. so you can receive your deposit back.  This will also reduce waste in our landfills.

POLICY FOR ALL CUSTOMERS:  It is the customer’s responsibility to return the pallets/tubes to SelecTurf, Inc. to receive their refund.

To ensure quick delivery for ALL customers, our drivers cannot go back to a finished job site or make a special trip to pick up empty pallets/tubes, even if they are in the area.  Empty sod pallets/tubes will be picked up if they are stacked & at the job site where our drivers are going to deliver your next order.

You can drop pallets/tubes anytime (after-hours included) at our farm in Jefferson City.  If we are not around, call and leave a message at the office to let us know how many you are returning and we will get back to you to refund your deposit.

  • Will you deliver to my area?

    Most likely, YES!

Our minimum to all areas is 10 pallets, unless you are in the Jefferson City or Columbia area then the minimum is 5 pallets.

If you need less than the minimum, we will deliver as little as 1 pallet if we have a truck in the area.  Typically, all it takes is a little logistics on our end and we are able to deliver just about any order that is more than one pallet.

  • How many pallets can fit on a delivery truck?

The maximum amount of pallets we can fit on a semi truck for delivery is 20 pallets of fescue or bluegrass.  This would equal 12,000 sq ft.

  • Will SelecTurf install sod at my house?

We do not offer installation as a service but most landscapers do.  Check your local listings or contact us for references in your area.

  • When do you replenish the top soil in your sod fields?

This is the most asked question.  Believe it or not, we do not have to “add dirt” to our fields after we harvest sod out of them.  It is mainly the root system & a small amount of soil that is taken when the sod is cut.

In fact, row croppers lose more soil from wind erosion than we do from harvesting turfgrass.

  • Is the sod guaranteed?

Due to many variables out of our control when the sod leaves our farm, we do not guarantee the turfgrass.  However, if you closely follow our recommendations, you should have success with your lawn.

If for some reason there is an issue, contact our office immediately (within 12 hours of getting the sod).  Make sure to take multiple pictures of any concern.

Typically, lack of watering at the most critical periods with correct amounts of water, is what causes newly installed turf to stress.  Make sure to see our watering guide here.

Turf FAQs

  • How thick is a piece of turf?

The root/dirt portion of a piece of turfgrass is anywhere from 3/8 to 1/2 inch thick.

  • How long does it take to install turf?

In general, it will take about one person 1 hour to install one pallet.

  • Does the turfgrass need to be fertilized when installed?

For best results, have your soil tested.

Rake in the recommended fertilizer, lime, peat, compost, etc. to a depth of 3-4 inches.

A great option for newly installed turf is this starter fertilizer.

  • How do you grow zoysia in your fields?

Once zoysia is harvested from our field, it will grow back in on its own.  This process takes about 3 years and is helped along with proper maintenance and fertilization.

  • Can you harvest sod in the winter?

YES! We can harvest our cool-season turfgrasses, fescue, and bluegrass if the weather allows.  As long as the fields are not too wet, there is no snow on the ground and the ground is not frozen, we will cut any time of the year.

  • Will turf installed in the winter survive?

If we can harvest, you can have success in installation in the winter.  Keep in mind, proper soil preparation and watering are still necessary for the roots to establish.

  • When can I start mowing my lawn?

Mow newly installed turf as needed.  Make sure to let the lawn dry out not to cause any issues when mowing.  Typically, the turf is ready to be mowed in 2-3 weeks once it has established its roots.

Seeding FAQs

  • How much seed do I need?

It is recommended to apply 8# per every 1,000 square feet if you are creating a new stand of grass OR 4# per every 1,000 square feet if you are overseeding.

    We sell seed & fertilizer.

  • Does SelecTurf sell zoysia seed?

We do NOT sell zoysia seed.  The variety we grow is only established through the vegetative plant.

If you do not want to fully sod your lawn, you can cut our slabs into plugs to establish a zoysia lawn.  This method does take a few years to fully grow into a stand of zoysia.

It can be very difficult to establish a zoysia lawn from seed.

  • When is the best time to seed my lawn?

Fall is by far the best time to seed fescue.  During this period, you take advantage of warmer soil temperatures so the seed can germinate and you take advantage of the cooling air temperatures that the sod establishes well in.

Mid-September to early October is the BEST time to seed fescue.

Springtime seeding is also doable but keep in mind that you will not be able to pretreat for crabgrass if you seed in the spring.

  • Should I straw my lawn when I seed?

When applying straw to a newly seeded lawn, only cover the area approximately 80%.  You should still see some dirt.

  • Should I aerate my lawn when I overseed?

Core aeration is a great practice to do every few years or when your lawn is doing poorly.  This practice pulls out cylinder-shaped soil plugs that allow water and oxygen to get to the root system which will strengthen it.  It also allows better soil to seed contact when you are overseeding.
